JOHN HOPKINS UNIVERSITY THANK YOU VIDEO

The following is a rerun of a blog I wrote a few years ago, about John Hopkins University and their 2009 year-end thank you video:

Cindybin's Video Pick of the Week: JOHN HOPKINS AND GOMEZ ADAMS

“’Tish, you spoke French!”

Who doesn’t recognize that famous line from Gomez Addams to his lovely wife Morticia? Anywhere, anytime, the foreign accent drove him wild. Not to mention the other wild and spooky things that happened in that eccentric clan!

The Addams Family is one of my favorite shows, running in the mid-60’s along with another creepy and kooky family show, The Munsters. (I’m proud to own the entire DVD sets for both series.) I happened to catch a glimpse of The Addams’ the other day and was curious to see who was still alive, so I looked it up on Wiki. Carolyn Jones, who played Morticia, died in 1983 at age 53 (the same age as me, ack!). Of course Grandmama and Uncle Fester are both deceased, and Lurch died in his 40’s. Little Pugsley and Wednesday are all grown up, and even Cousin Itt is still around. That leaves John Astin as Gomez, who at 79 is definitely alive and kicking, and even featured in a cute music video I will share with you.

Astin had numerous roles throughout his long career, but is probably best known for his role as Gomez. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1952 as a drama major and continues to act. What’s more, he teaches method acting and directing in the Writing Seminars Department at his alma mater, and hopes to re-establish a drama major at the University.

In a recent music video released by Hopkins, Astin can be briefly seen singing and playing the cowbell. Faculty, staff and students joined together to create this production as a year-end thank you to supporters and friends of the University. It’s well worth viewing several times to catch all the witty, clever and interesting effects. The tune is catchy, too! You wouldn’t have to watch it but you’ll be glad that you did, that you did…

Seriously. People should stop worrying about weed. It isn't bad for you; the only thing you have against it is that you think it is morally wrong. It is not. Alcohol, on the other hand, is highly addictive and horrible for the majority of your body, and yet it is legal! Making a drug illegal does not lower demand, it just lowers supply. This means that the price of the substance goes up and the criminals who manufacture drugs get rich. Wanting cannabis to be illegal is childish, since it helps drug dealers make money that could be pumped into the economy. Furthermore, if we treated drug addicts (not potheads, but people who are truly addicted to a drug) like equals instead of criminals, we could rehabilitate them and allow more space in prisons for murderers and rapists. People in society will never stop doing drugs, so the only thing you can do is treat the behavior, not punish them after the fact.

AARGGHHH, you must be the 200th pot smoker just this week to tell me all this same old stuff! I have said over and over that we shouldn't smoke pot OR drink alcohol! How hard is that?? Of course alcohol is addictive and bad for you! (Although there are lots of people who say that alcohol is GOOD for you.) But even if alcohol were good for you, just the fact that it's a mind-altering drug makes it wrong! Can't you see that?? And I have said over and over that if you people would just shape up and NOT SMOKE POT, the whole legal issue would be moot! There wouldn't BE any "drug war" or drug laws, because people would have the morals and maturity to not even THINK about using drugs to get high! What a thing to do! Stop focusing on the LAW, and start focusing on yourself and the pot smokers, and help me speak up against pot so that people will understand why we shouldn't use this stuff! And it IS morally wrong. But as I've said a billion times, it's just plain COMMON SENSE. A grown adult should be WELL PAST the age where they'd want to use a mind-altering drug to get high, stoned, buzzed, relax and unwind, have "fun", etc. What a thing to do! Comments like yours prove my point about why we all need to speak up against pot and why it should be illegal forever. It's not because of marijuana itself, but because of the people who use and defend it!
